EE sample marking

The following section of the site has samples of extended essays.  As we are not allowed to actually share students' work that has been submitted to the IB, the EEs here were not submitted because students dropped out of the program or they are based on a student's work but heavily edited by me as a means of helping teachers and students understand the assessment process.

You will also see that often the marking is not a whole EE as this takes a lot of time to mark.  You will see "sections" of EEs and advice for feedback.

All of the marking is my own and is not "official" IB marking, but is based on training and experience with the EE.

Hi John, You have mentioned that you are doing your own paper for this page. Please put one with grade A, so that we will know what all is to be expected of an EE writing.

John Crane 27 February 2018 - 05:09

Dear Lakshmi, I must admit that writing a new EE is not my priority at this point - it is trying to get lesson plans up for the whole first year of the curriculum and essay samples. I did write one which would get a B with comments that should help to guide students with what they would need to do to get an A. Most likely, a better EE will be posted this summer, after I have a better understanding of what will get a top mark in the new curriculum.

Dear John, could you please tell me whether the results of quasi experiments are allowed to be used in the EE? My student is trying to answer the question To what extent does bilingualism improve adults’ inhibitory control? and most of her studies are quasi. Forgive me if I am making you answer a question to which the answer should be obvious. For some reason I am not sure anymore. Thank you!

John Crane 4 March 2018 - 16:04

Dear Katarzyna - yes, any type of research may be used for the EE. The restriction on quasi-experiments is only for the IAs.

Dear John,
Do you think it is possible to provide us with a graded EE sample based on the new curriculum? Preferably one that got A!
Thank you !

John Crane 17 September 2018 - 05:49

Dear Hana

You have a sample here. thinkib.net

They are very difficult to write as I am not allowed to use an actual student's work. That means I have to write one myself! I cannot give one that got an A from the IB. This has to do with European law as well as the fact that IB actually owns all materials that are submitted to them - and we cannot use them on the site. Once I have finished putting up lesson plans and sample essays for the entire curriculum, I will try to write an A and a C EE, but for now, I fear, this is the best I can do.

Ah ok thank you so much for the clarification!Thank you once again!
